BUST VIEW CDV OF CAPTAIN HARRISON DE F. YOUNG OF THE 2ND NEW HAMPSHIRE INFANTRY

$165.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: P13648

Nice crisp view of Captain Young posed with his left shoulder toward the camera and his head turned to face the lens. Contrast is excellent showing a crisp white shirt collar under a dark frock coat with very clear Captains shoulder straps on the shoulder.

Image has some light foxing and surface dirt but nothing that detracts in any way from the clarity and crispness of the image. Mount corners are clipped.

Reverse has a photographer’s back mark for CARE & MORRILL…CONCORD, N. H. Reverse also has some collector information in pencil stating Young was an aid-de-camp for General Dan Sickles. A period pencil inscription at top of reverse reads “YOURS ON THE” then this is a drawn square or diamond followed by “HARRY YOUNG / ADC / MAJ. GEN. BALDY SMITH.”

(We also have an ammunition crate that belonged to Captain Young which is stenciled with his name. It is our item #890-01.)

Harrison De F. Young was born in Lancaster, New Hampshire. As a young adult he studied law with the firm of Benton & Ray in his hometown of Lancaster. He is listed as being 21 years old when he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in Company F, of the 2nd New Hampshire Infantry on June 4, 1861. During his service with the regiment he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in Company H on July 11, 1862 and Captain of Company A on August 20, 1862.

The 2nd New Hampshire saw action throughout the war losing heavily at 1st Bull Run, Williamsburg, 2nd Bull Run where Harrison was wounded to an undetermined degree. (It was also at this time that he was appointed as ADC and Ordnance Officer to his division commander,) Gettysburg and Cold Harbor. The regiment’s heaviest losses came at Gettysburg where it fought in the Peach Orchard at the apex of General Sickles’ line. There the regiment lost 22 killed, 127 wounded, 24 captured and 20 missing.

Captain Harrison was mustered out on June 21, 1864 and returned to his home in Lancaster where he died on March 3, 1904. [ad]
