Vignette image of Oliver M. Dame of the 2nd New Hampshire Infantry. Dame is shown wearing a dark forage cap and sack coat with a matching military vest. Bottom of image has light period ink inscription that reads “YOURS TRULY / O. M. DAME / COMMISARY SERGT. 2ND N. H. VOL.”
Image is sharp and clear with great contrast. Image does have some light surface dirt and top edge is trimmed.
Reverse has photographer’s imprint for HALL & JUDKINS, NEAR HEADQUARTERS 24TH ARMY CORPS with collector information in pencil.
The 2nd New Hampshire saw action throughout the war losing heavily at 1st Bull Run, Williamsburg, 2nd Bull Run, Gettysburg and Cold Harbor. The regiment’s heaviest losses came at Gettysburg where it fought in the Peach Orchard at the apex of General Sickles’ line. There the regiment lost 22 killed, 127 wounded, 24 captured and 20 missing.
After Gettysburg the regiment moved to the 18th Corps where it saw action at Swift Creek, Drewry’s Bluff, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. In December of 1864 they were transferred to the 24th Corps with whom they remained till the end of the war.
Oliver M. Dame was born in Concord, New Hampshire. He is listed as being 18 years old when he enlisted as a Private in Company F of the 2nd on May 22, 1861. He re-enlisted on January 1, 1864 and was promoted to Commissary Sergeant the following June 24th. He was given a commission as 1st Lieutenant on May 20, 1865 and resigned September 25, 1865.
After the war Dame moved to Virginia where he married in 1870. He died in Lancaster, Virginia on March 20, 1872. [ad]
