View is a vignette of Lt  Mayhew C. Batchelder wearing a dark frock coat with shoulder straps and a white shirt.

Image is clear with good contrast.

Reverse has a bold period ink signature that reads “M. C. BATCHELDER.” There is also a photographer’s mark for BRIGHAM… DOVER, N.H. There is also a orange three cent tax stamp and some collector information in pencil.

Top and bottom edge of mount is slightly trimmed. Upper left corner has a slight crease.

Mayhew C. Batchelder was born in Windham, Maine. He was living in New Durham, N. H. when he enlisted as a Private in Company A, 12th New Hampshire Infantry on August 14, 1862. He was promoted Corporal December 25, 1862, Sergeant April 19, 1863, 2nd Lieutenant January 1, 1864 and 1st Lieutenant of Company B on July 20, 1864.

The regimental history of the 12th says that as he laid down for a nap in the trenches before Petersburg on August 19, 1864 the Confederate batteries opened on the Union lines wounding Lieutenant Batchelder. He recovered and was discharged at Richmond, Va. on June 21, 1865. E died in Concord, New Hampshire on January 24, 1891.

The 12th New Hampshire was assigned to the 3rd Corps of the Army of the Potomac where it saw its first action at Fredericksburg.

The regiment suffered heavily at Chancellorsville on May 3, 1863 and at Gettysburg where the regiment defended the area around the Klingle farm along the Emmitsburg Road suffering 17 killed, 68 wounded, 3 captured and 18 missing.

In December of 1863 the 12th was transferred to the 18th Corps and saw action at Williamsburg, Swift Creek, Drewry’s Bluff, Fort Stevens, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.   [ad]
