Nice clear image of Orrin Taber wearing a dark frock coat with 2nd Lieutenant shoulder straps. Image has good contrast. Mount has minor chipping at top with a small stain in three of the four corners.

Reverse has pencil inscription that reads “ORIN TABAR.” Photographer’s imprint is for D. O. FURNALD, MANCHESTER, N.H.

Orrin Taber was born in Grafton, New Hampshire. He is listed as being 21 years old when he enlisted on August 19, 1861 at Manchester, New Hampshire as a Quarter Master Sergeant in Battery A, 1st New Hampshire Light Artillery.  He held this position through April 16, 1863, when he was promoted to 1st Sergeant.  He served with the unit through all their major battles including Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. Taber was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on February 13, 1864. He served in the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor and the many battles around Petersburg until October7, 1864 when he resigned.  He survived the war and afterwards lived in Nashua, New Hampshire before moving to Santa Clara County, California where he lived out his life as a farmer.    [ad]
