Vignette view of Edwin H. Hobbs as a 1st Lieutenant.

The image is clear with good contrast but does have a single spot of foxing on the subject’s forehead. Bottom of paper has a faded period ink signature but “E. H. HOBBS” is visible. Image has light surface dirt throughout.

Reverse has photographer’s imprint for D. O. FURNALD… MANCHESTER, N.H. There is also a modern pencil ID at top and a small white sicker with a collector number.

Edwin Hobbs was born in Sanford, Maine in 1835. He was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant in the 1st New Hampshire Light Artillery on August 21, 1861. Hobbs served with his battery at 2nd Bull Run, Antietam and Fredericksburg. He was discharged on June 22, 1863.

After his service Hobbs worked as a civil engineer. He died in Manchester, New Hampshire on November 27, 1890 and is buried there in Valley Cemetery.  [ad]
