CDV is a bust view of Frank Guest Smith set in an oval. He is pictured wearing a dark four button sack coat with 1st Lieutenant shoulder straps.

Image is clear with good contrast. Bottom of mount has a very bold period ink signature that reads “FRANK GUEST SMIH 1st LT. 4TH ARTY.”

Mount corners are clipped and paper is slightly crooked on the mount. Left side has small ink smudge.

Reverse is blank except for some collector information in pencil.

Franklin G. Smith was born February 16, 1840 in Pennsylvania. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 4th US Artillery on August 5, 1861. He earned a brevet promotion to Captain for his actions at Stones River and to Major for his services at Chickamauga.

After the war Smith remained in the army and was made Captain in the Regular Army on February 5, 1867. He rose through the ranks being made Major in the 2nd Artillery August 28, 1891, Lieutenant Colonel 6th Artillery March 8, 1898, Colonel February 2, 1901 and finally retired as a Brigadier General.

He died on October 7, 1912 in Washington, D.C> and was buried there in Arlington National Cemetery. [ad]
