Image shows DuPont in the uniform of a 1st Lieutenant with artists’ embellishments to his goatee and hair. There also appears to be pencil shading on the left arm and side of the subject.

Image is on the light side but still shows details. There is light to moderate surface dirt along the edges of the image.

Reverse has period inscription that reads “H. A. DUPONT 1862.” There is also some collector’s information in pencil.

Henry Algernon DuPont was born July 30, 1838 in Greenville, Delaware. On May 6, 1861 he graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point and was appointed a 2nd Lieutenant of Engineers.

On May 14, 1861 he was appointed 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant of the 5th US Artillery where he remained until 1864. During that time he did garrison duty at Harrisburg and Fort Hamilton in New York. He was promoted Captain on March 24, 1864.

Captain DuPont was engaged at New Market, Piedmont, Lexington, Lynchburg and Salem. He became Chief of Artillery, Army of West Virginia on July 28, 1864. He then saw action at Halltown, Berryville, Opequan and Fisher’s Hill. He was promoted to Major by brevet for gallant services in the last two named engagements. DuPont also served at Cedar Creek where he was awarded the Medal of Honor for “encouraging his men to stand to their guns and checked advance of the enemy.”

DuPont finished the war as Chief of Artillery of the Department of West Virginia. He remained in the army till March of 1875.

In civilian life he was president and general manager of the Wilmington Northern Railroad Company, plus he engaged in agricultural pursuits. In 1906, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving until 1917.

He died December 31, 1926 and is buried in DuPont Cemetery, Christians Hundred, Delaware. [ad]
