Nice crisp bust view of Horatio B. Reed in civilian clothes. Bottom of mount has photographer’s mark of J. T. UPSON, BUFFALO, N.Y.

Reverse has a wonderful bold inscription that reads “FR. ‘AULD LANG SYNE’ WITH REGARDS OF CAPT. MARTIN’S SINCERE FRIEND. REED 5TH ARTY.” There is also some collector’s information in pencil.

Horatio B. Reed was born and raised in New York. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 5th US Artillery on May 14, 1861. He saw action at 1st Bull Run and won a brevet promotion to 1st Lieutenant to date from July 21, 1861. He was breveted to Captain on July1, 1862 and to Major on October 14, 1863 for service at Bristoe Station. He became Lieutenant Colonel of the 22nd New York Cavalry on November 26, 1864 and was breveted a fourth time to Lieutenant Colonel in the Regular Army on March 13, 1865. He remained in the army until May of 1870. Reed also served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Egyptian army from 1874-1875. He died on March 7, 1888.  [ad]
