Period ink ID on reverse: "Regards of L.J. Marvin Northampton Fulton Co N.Y.", "Major L. I. Marvin, U.S.A. who served under Doctor Henry H. Birkey(?) U.S.A. when he was Surgeon in charge of Eckington U.S.A. General Hospital Washington, D.C. 1861 1862."

Langdon Ithiel Marvin was born 6/26/1805 in Woodbury, CT. Served as a member of the New York Assembly in 1840. He enlisted at the age of 55 on 3/8/62 at Boonville, NY as a Surgeon; on 3/17/62 he was commissioned into Field & Staff of the 97th New York Infantry. Discharged on 6/15/62, having resigned. Filed for an invalid pension in June 1863; his widow filed for a pension October 1869.  He is referred to in his records incorrectly as L. J. Marvin, and Lewis J. Marvin. Dr., and is also referenced incorrectly in various places as serving with the 87th New York. Two of Marvin’s sons, John and Philemon, also served in the Union Army. Marvin died on 1/31/1869 in Northampton, Fulton County, NY, and is buried in Northampton Cemetery in the town of Northampton, also known as Fish House.
