Full length standingl image of bearded, early forty-ish officer clad in slouch hat (w/ "US"staff insignia &w/Jeff Davis eagle side-pin), frock coat, sword belt w/shoulder strap, sash & sword. Backmark: "Hallet & Brother/ 184 & 186 Bowery/ Near Grand St./ N.Y. Pencilled notation: "Charles J. Nordquist/ Surgeon, 83 N. Y. Inf. Crisp image w/very slight soiling front and rear. Else VG plus.

Charles Nordquist enlisted as Surgeon and was mustered into the 9th NY State Militia (83rd New York) on 9/1/1862. He served a time as acting Medical Director of 2nd Division 1st Corps from May 1863, just prior to the Battle of Gettysburg, through at least early 1864. He was mustered out with his regiment 6/23/1864.- The 9th New York {83rd New York Infy) served in turn with the 5th, 3rd & 1st Corps, before returning to the 5th Corps in March 1864. Along the way the regiment participated in the 1862 Valley Campaign, the Second Battle of Bull Run, and in all major engagements of the Army of the Potomac from Antietam through Cold Harbor. During service it lost 156 men killed and mortally wounded, and 88 by disease. Fine CDV of the gallant medical officer of the 83rd New York. Accompanied by documentation.
