Unidentified image of a soldier posed with one hand resting on the back of a cushioned chair while in his other hand he holds an enlisted man’s kepi.

The soldier is wearing a dark jacket that is trimmed on the collar and down the front. There is also trim in the shape of a chevron on each cuff. Also visible are tombeau at the lower front and upper front corners of the jacket. Beneath the jacket is a vest with small buttons down the front ending behind a wide dark sash. The subject is also wearing dark trousers to match the jacket and vest and a close look at his feet reveal black leggings or gaiters on his feet. The kepi in his hand looks to have colored trim around the disc and down the side and front and rear seams. Attached to the front of the kepi is an infantry hunting horn insignia.

The reverse of the image has a photographer’s imprint for J. KIRK… NEWARK, N.J. Also on the reverse is a pencil inscription with “MOTHER’S FATHER.” There are other pencil marks and very faintly written under the inscription may be a name but it is too light to make out.

The image is clear with great contrast. The image and the mount has light surface dirt throughout. There also appears to be a light scratch near the subject’s right shoulder but it is nothing to detract from the image.

The 33rd New Jersey was raised in late 1863 and was attached to the 11th Corps, Army of the Potomac and later the 20th Corps, Army of the Cumberland. The regiment saw action at Chattanooga, Missionary Ridge, Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, New Hope Church, Dallas, Kennesaw Mountain, Peach Tree Creek, Atlanta, the March to the Sea, Bentonville and the surrender of Johnston’s Army. During its service the regiment lost 163 men to battle, wounds and disease.  [ad]
