CDV of West Point cadet James Bond Mackall seated in cadet uniform. James was born in Barnesville, OH 2/21/44 and entered the Military Academy on 9/1/64, he graduated 5th out of 54 in the Class of 1868 and was immediately commissioned brevet 2d Lt. Corps of Engineers. He served with the Corps of Engineers at Willet's Point, New York Harbor from 10/1/68 - 5/69 at which time he was given a leave of absence for 2 months due to hemorrhage of the lungs. On 8/16/69 he was made Chief of Engineers of the District of New Mexico; he remained at that post until his death by consumption on 4/18/71 at Santa Fe, NM at the age of 27. Lt. W.L. Marshall wrote of Mackall "He was conscientious and firm in the performace of his duty, considerate and gentle in disposition and bearing, a good officer, and a worthy friend."  [as]
