Reverse has a photographers imprint for the firm listed on the front but there is also a period pencil inscription that reads “LT. D. C. SMITH, A.D.C. MARCH 21^ST 1863 / DEWITT CLINTON SMITH, RIPON, WIS. BULLY BOY-TIM EAN (?)”

Unfortunately there are two officers named Dewitt C. Smith who show as being in their 20’s as this fellow obviously is, one in the 1^st Michigan Cavalry and one in the 21^st New York Infantry. There are also two other officers by the same name whose ages are not listed. The subject of this image can be any of the four men listed here. [ad]
