John M. Barker was born in 1830. He was residing in Providence, Rhode Island when he enlisted as a Sergeant in Company D, 1st Rhode Island Volunteers. After serving in the 1st Battle of Bull Run Barker was mustered out on August 2, 1861.

In May Barker was sent with his Company to Fort Seward in South Carolina and in September moved to Bay Point where he served as Acting Quartermaster. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on November 28, 1862 and to Captain of Company M in December of 1863.

By the end of the war Barker was serving as Major but was never mustered in at that rank. Major Barker was mustered out on August 27, 1865.
