Edward Payson Hammond was born on September 1, 1831 in Ellington, Connecticut. He graduated from Williams in 1858, and studied two years in the Union Theological Seminary in New York City. In 1860-61 he completed his studies in the theological seminary of the Free Church in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was ordained an evangelist by the Presbytery of New York City on January 2, 1863, and in the spring of 1864 began laboring in Chicago with D.W. Moody. In 1866-68 Hammond made an extended tour through Great Britain, France, Italy, Egypt, and Palestine. In 1867 he held services for six weeks in London, where he was instrumental in establishing the “Children’s Special Service Mission”. His labors in St. Louis in 1874 resulted in the addition of over 5,000 members to the different churches and in the organization of the “Evangelical Alliance of St. Louis”, comprising clergymen of all denominations, who united to promote evangelistic work. In 1874 he made a trip as far north as Alaska, reaching that territory before any other missionary. Hammond preached with great success in all parts of the U.S. and Canada, and spent a total of six and a half years in Europe. In 1886 he conducted a series of meetings in London, extending over seven months. Hammond was the first to introduce, “the service of song”, and to use hymns that have become popular for such meetings. He is the author of about one hundred books and tracts, besides many hymns. He was called, “the Children’s Evangelist”.  [sm]
