Image shows 1st Lieutenant Robert Robison posed with his right hand thrust into his coat in the classic Napoleonic pose. He wears a dark frock coat buttoned down the front and matching dark trousers. At his feet is a strong period ink signature “ROB. P. ROBISON.”

Image is clear with very good contrast. Papers has some staining around edges and light surface dirt on the mount.

Reverse has another good period ink inscription that reads “JOHNSTOWN / CAMBRIA / COUNTY / PENNA.” There is no photographers imprint.

Robert Potter Robison was born in Somerset County, Pa. on June 19, 1824. He was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant in Company C, 54th Pennsylvania Infantry on September 30, 1861.

The regiment was assigned to the 8th Corps and the Department of West Virginia. The regiment was in a number of smaller engagements before it saw its first heavy action at New Market on May 15, 1864. There is suffered 2 killed, 10 wounded and 20 captured.

Lieutenant Robison was mustered out on September 3, 1864.

He returned to Johnstown, married and fathered 9 children. He died in Johnstown on March 3, 1892 and is buried there in Grandview Cemetery.    [ad]
