Full standing image of Lt. James Donelson, spelled Donaldson in the records, of Company E, 52nd Ohio. The Lt. is posed in front of a painted backdrop of a tent and tree on the edge of a pastoral scene. He wears a dark single-breasted frock coat with matching trousers. He has his left hand slipped into in his coat in the classic Napoleonic pose while his right hand is at his hip holding his slouch hat.

Image is clean and bright with excellent contrast.

Reverse has photographers imprint for the Metropolitan Photograph Gallery of Nashville, Tennessee. Reverse also has a period pencil inscription that reads “COMPLIMENTS OF J. DONELSON, LIEUT. CO. E, 52d O.V.I.    TO D. F. MISER LIEUT. CO. G, 52 O.V.I. JULY 29TH 1863.”

James H. Donaldson (Donelson) was 22 years old when he enlisted as 1st Sergeant in Company E, 52nd Ohio Infantry on August 11, 1862.

He went with his regiment to Kentucky where they saw some minor action around Lexington and Chaplain Hill between August and October of 1862.

On January 11, 1863 Donaldson received a commission to 2nd Lieutenant. He served with his Company at Chickamauga, Buzzards Roost, Resaca, Dallas, Kennesaw Mountain and Peach Tree Creek. During the fighting at Peach Tree Creek on the 19th of July Donaldson was killed in action. He is buried in Union Cemetery in Steubenville, Ohio.

David F. Miser was 23 years old when he enlisted in Co. G, 52nd Ohio Infantry as a 1st Sergeant on August 18, 1862. He was promoted 2nd Lieutenant on January 10, 1863.

While in the trenches at Kennesaw Mountain Lt. Miser was moving from one end of the regimental line to the other. When cautioned to stoop down to avoid sharpshooters Miser said “I will stoop to no Rebel.” He continued walking along bolt upright and before he reached the end of the regimental line he was hit and seriously wounded. Lt. Miser was removed to Nashville where he died on August 2, 1864. He is buried in Leas Cemetery, Jefferson County, Ohio.

Very nice image with an interesting story to tell.
