Image is of Charles L. Jones who served as a Lieutenant in Company C. 16th New York Infantry.

Jones wears a dark jacket minus shoulder straps with a matching military vest.

Image and mount have light surface dirt. Bottom of mount has a wonderful strong period ink signature that reads “C. L. JONES / 1ST LT. CO. C, 16TH REGT. N.Y.S.V.”

Reverse has JAS. M. DOW, OGDENSBURGH back mark.

Charles Leavitt Jones was born in 1838. He was 24 years old when he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in Company A, 16th New York Infantry on May 15, 1861. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in Company C, on November 8, 1862 and was mustered out May 22, 1863 at Albany.

During his service the regiment saw action at Bull Run, the Seven Days, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Salem Church. Jones was slightly wounded at South Mountain.

After the war he served as chief of the issue bureau, Treasury Department. He died on the job in 1892 and is buried in Rock Creek Cemetery in D.C.  [AD]
