William H. Green of Portland, Me enlisted in the 17th Maine as a Sgt. of Co. B in August of 1862. Green was promoted to 2nd Lt. Dec. 1, 1862, 1st Lt. Oct. 1, 1863 and Capt. of Co. G on Dec. 11, 1863. He held a Brevet promotion to Major for his services in the Overland Campaign. He was wounded slightly in the side at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863 and was eventually mustered out June 4, 1865.

The CDV offered here is a bust view of Green as a Captain. The back of the CDV has a revenue stamp and a photographers mark of "A. M. McKenney" of Portland, Me. There is a period pencil ID on the back as well. The bottom of the card has been trimmed but it does not effect the image. National Archive records come with the photo.
