This large group of images of members of the famous 7th New York National Guard. The regiment was federalized three times during the war. Once in 1861, 62 and 63. Most of the images are full standing views with the exception of four. Only three are identified. All the officers whose hat insignia can be seen have the regimental number “7” as do several of the enlisted men. Also visible are the waist belt plates of several of the enlisted men which bear the number “6.” The number on the belt plate of the enlisted men show that they are members of the 6th Company of the 7th which would be Company F. Several men also wear the company number on their caps.

The group consists of:

  1. Autographed bust view of Alexander Shaler as a Brigadier General. Image is clear with good contrast. Reverse has a Brady back mark and a very strong, bold autograph. In brief, Shaler was born in Connecticut in 1827 and at the age of 7 his family moved to New York. He joined the New York Militia in 1848 and rose to be Major in the 7th. During the Civil War Shaler received the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Second Battle of Fredericksburg. After the war, he was at various times the head of the New York City Fire Department, president of the National Rifle Association, and Mayor of Ridgefield, New Jersey from 1899 to 1901.
  2. Bust view in civilian clothes of Colonel Marshall Lefferts. Image has exceptional clarity and contrast but does have scattered foxing. Reverse has modern ID but it is confirmed by numerous on-line images. Photographer’s imprint is for CHARLES D. FREDRICKS & CO. NEW YORK. Colonel Lefferts led the 7th New York State Militia during all three of its Federal activations and made a name for himself by his determination to reach Washington, D.C. at the beginning of the war. The arrival of the 7th in Washington relieved the anxiety of President Lincoln and earned for the 7th the reputation of being “The Regiment That Saved Washington.”
  3. Full standing image of an officer wearing a forage cap with a number “7” in a wreath on front. The unusual thing is that he is posed wearing only his shirt and light trousers with two wide parallel leg stripes. These stripes can also be seen on some of the officer’s images that follow. At his waist the officer wears a sword belt with a plate that looks to have an “NY” in a wreath. Attached to the belt are two holstered pistols and the scabbard for his Model 1850 Foot Officers sword which is drawn and being held in his right hand. Image is clear and clean with a Brady mark on front bottom of the mount. Reverse has a period pencil inscription that reads “HOLSTED.” This is 1st Lieutenant Richard F. Halstedt who was commissioned in April 1861 and was mustered out in June of that same year.
  4. Unidentified bust image of a beard man who appears to be in uniform but the image is a profile view and the beard being long makes it difficult to tell if it is a civilian coat or military. Image is clear with good contrast and light surface dirt. Back mark is J. H. YOUNG’S GALLERIES.
  5. Unidentified bust image of soldier wearing a kepi. This clean shaven image shows the subject wearing a kepi and a single breasted frock coat with Lieutenant’s shoulder straps. Image is clear with good contrast and light surface dirt. Back mark is J. H. YOUNG’S GALLERIES.
  6. Full standing unidentified 2nd Lieutenant wearing a forage cap with a number “7” in a wreath on front. He also wears a dark frock coat and trousers with three parallel leg stripes. At his waist are two belts. One belt holds a militia type sword and the other belt supports an odd looking holster and revolver. Good contrast. Light surface dirt. Reverse is blank.
  7. Full standing unidentified 1st Lieutenant wearing a kepi with a number “7” in a wreath on front. He also wears a dark frock coat and light trousers with three parallel leg stripes. He also wears a sash and sword belt at his waist. His Model 1850 Foot Officers sword is drawn and is being held, point down, on his right side. Good contrast and clean. Reverse is blank.
  8. Full standing unidentified Captain holding a kepi in his right hand which is down by his side. He also wears a dark frock coat and light trousers with a sword belt at his waist. His Model 1850 Foot Officers sword is cradled in his left hand while his sash is being worn diagonally across his chest in the manner of the “Officer of the Day.” Very good contrast. Mostly clean. Reverse is blank.
  9. Full standing unidentified 1st Lieutenant wearing a kepi with a wreath and a non-descript letter & number combination at center front. He also wears a dark frock coat and light trousers with a sword belt at his waist. His Model 1850 Foot Officers sword is cradled in his left arm. Good contrast with some surface dirt along bottom of mount. Reverse is blank. Brady/Washington imprint on bottom of mount. There is some period writing in pencil on bottom front of mount but it is unreadable.

He also wears dark trousers and holds a light colored kepi with a number “7” on the front in his right hand. The subject seated on the balustrade wears the standard Union infantry uniform of a dark four-button sack coat and light trousers. The trousers have a wide NCO stripe but there are no chevrons on the coat. The sack coat is open to reveal a light colored shirt. The trousers have rolled up cuffs. At his waist he wears a white belt with rectangular plate as well as white cross belts with rectangular plate. One cross belt supports the cartridge box while the other supports a bayonet scabbard that is not visible. Attached to the waist belt is a black cap box.
