Backmark: “Published by/ F. & H.T.Anthony/ “FA”/ 501 Broadway, New York.” Frontal bust portrait, in uniform. Slightly yellowed, but crisp in features, w/bordering trim, ca. 1861-62.
A native Marylander and 1837 West Point graduate, Elzey served in the Second Seminole War and received brevet promotion to c, after participating in the Mexican War battles of Cerro Gordo, Molino del Rey, Chapultepec and the capture of Mexico City. Resigning from the U.S. Army to enter the Confederate service, Elzey received an on-the-field promotion to General by President Davis at the Battle of First Manassas, and later commanded a Brigade during Stonewall Jackson’s Valley Campaign, and was badly wounded at Gaines Mill, ending his active field career. Surviving the war, He died in Baltimore in 1871, at age 52.
