Wartime lithograph CDV of John Sedgwick in the uniform of a Major General.

Image is clear and bottom front of mount is printed with “MAJ. GEN. SEDGWICK.” Top edge is trimmed and there is some light surface dirt.

Reverse has period ink inscription that reads “PRESENTED BY SGT. PADDLEFORD TO MR. F. O’DONAHUE JUNE 8, 1864 AT McCLELLAN U.S.A. GENL. HOSPITAL PHILADELPHIA, PA.”

It is believed that the Sergeant Paddleford is Frank G. Paddleford of Company C, 2nd Vermont Infantry. According to the 2nd Vermont regimental history Paddleford enlisted as a Private on May 1, 1861. He was wounded and taken prisoner on June 28, 1862 and paroled on September 13, 1862. He was promoted to Corporal and then Sergeant and was wounded a second time at Spotsylvania on May 10th 1864. He was mustered out on June 29, 1864.

Sgt. Paddleford died on January 1, 1867 of typhoid fever. He was 26 years old.

The 2nd Vermont was part of the famous Vermont Brigade and served in Gen. Sedgwick’s 6th Corps.  [ad]
