Image shows Lafayette F. Mumford seated in partial left profile. He wears a dark civilian style frockcoat with matching dark military vest and dark trousers with thin leg stripe.
Image is clear and clean with good contrast.
Reverse has photographer’s imprint for J. P. VAIL…PALMYRA, N.Y. along with a canceled blue 2 cent playing card stamp.
Period ink inscription at bottom reads “CAPT. L. F. MUMFORD, CO. A 111 NY.”
Mumford was 25 years old when he enlisted as a Private in Company A, 111th New York Infantry on September 7, 1864. He was promoted Captain on October 10, 1864 and was discharged for promotion on April 29, 1865 when he became Major of the 194th New York. He was discharged at Elmira, New York on May 3, 1865.
While with the 111th Mumford served in front of Petersburg and in the pursuit of Lee’s army leading to Appomattox. He saw no active service with the 194th.
Mumford died on May 22, 1889 in Bloomingdale, Van Buren County, Michigan and was buried in Palmyra Cemetery, Palmyra, Wayne County, New York. [ad]
