Full standing CDV of Jeremiah A. Sullivan as a Major. He is posed with one hand on his hip holding a kepi. He wears dark a double-breasted shell jacket with major’s shoulder-straps and light colored mounted trousers.

Image is very clear and clean. Contrast is excellent. There is one spot of discoloration along one edge but it does not touch the subject.

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for J. B. ROBERTS & CO. … ROCHESTER, N.Y. along with some collector information in pencil.

Jeremiah Andrew Sullivan was born in Ireland in 1840.

He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in Company I, 13th New York Infantry on April 25, 1861. At the time he was 22 years old. Sullivan was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on January 9, 1862 and to Captain on April 6, 1863. He was mustered out at Rochester, New York on May 14, 1863. While with the 13th he saw service at Bull Run, Yorktown, Gaines Mill, Savage’s Station, Malvern Hill, 2nd Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville.

Sullivan was next commissioned Major of the 1st New York Veteran Cavalry on November 19, 1863. On March 10, 1864 the regiment was involved in a skirmish at Cabletown, West Virginia during which Major Sullivan was killed in action.

His body was returned to New York and buried in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Rochester. [ad]
