View is waist up of John H. Pickett in the uniform of an Assistant Surgeon. He wears a single breasted frock coat with 1st Lieutenant straps. A close look with a magnifying glass shows something on each strap after the single bar. Most likely it is the letters “MS” but can’t be sure.
Image is clear with excellent contrast. It has light to moderate surface dirt and some wear on the edges.
Revers has large photographer’s imprint for G. A. DOUGLASS & CO…BUFFALO, N.Y. Top of reverse also has a readable period ink inscription that reads “SINCERELY YOURS JOHN H. PICKETT, ASST. SERG. 49TH N.Y.S.V.”
John H. Pickett was 31 years old when he was made Hospital Steward of the 49th New York Infantry on August 22, 1861. He was promoted to Assistant Surgeon on August 23, 1862 and mustered out at Buffalo, New York on October 18, 1864.
The 49th served with the 4th and later the 6th Corps of the Army of the Potomac from the Peninsula to the end of the war. The regiment suffered heavy losses in the Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Cedar Creek. [ad]
