Image shows Charles H. Johnson posed leaning against a podium on which his forage cap rests. He wears a dark shell jacket with light trousers. The jacket has a high standing collar, unique 1st Sergeant chevrons that look to be made of cloth tape. The jacket also has a belt loop on one side.
Image is clean and bright with excellent contrast. Mount has been trimmed.
Reverse has collectors ID in modern pencil and a back mark for F. GUTEKUNST of Philadelphia. With the image is a Xerox copy of another photo of Johnson which helps confirm the ID.
Charles H. Johnson enlisted as a 1st Sergeant in Company G of the 90th Pennsylvania Infantry on June 17, 1861. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on July 21, 1863 and 1st Lieutenant on April 20, 1864 and was mustered out at Fort Dushane, Virginia on November 26, 1864.
The 90th Pennsylvania was engaged at 2nd Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Mine Run, Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Petersburg. The regiment lost 6 officers and 224 enlisted men killed, died of wounds and disease as well as many more wounded.
Johnson’s name appears on the Pennsylvania Monument at Gettysburg showing that he was present for their fight there on July 1st. [ad]
