Image is a vignette bust view CDV of James S. Bonsall of Company K, 90th Pennsylvania. Photo shows the young soldier in a dark frock coat and bowtie.

Image is clear with contrast that is a bit light. There is also light to moderate surface dirt and the mount has clipped corners.

Reverse has full period ink inscription that reads “YOURS TRULY JAS. S. BONSALL LIEUT CO. F 90th PI”. Reverse also has photographer’s imprint for F.S. KEELER… PHILADELPHIA

James S. Bonsall was born near Philadelphia on November 7, 1840. He enlisted as a Private in Company K, 90th Pennsylvania Infantry on September 17, 1861. He was promoted to Sergeant Major and received a commission to 2nd Lieutenant of Company F on January 19, 1863.

The 90th Pennsylvania was engaged at 2nd Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg (where Lt. Bonsall’s name appears on the Pennsylvania Memorial), Mine Run, Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Petersburg. The regiment lost 6 officers and 224 enlisted men killed, died of wounds and disease as well as many more wounded.

Of the 6 officers lost, one of them was James Bonsall. During the fighting for the Weldon Railroad, also known as the battle of Globe Tavern, on August 18, 1864 the 90th Pennsylvania found itself in an exposed position. While falling back Lt. Bonsall was killed. He is buried in Darby Friends Cemetery, Darby, Pennsylvania.  [AD]
