Full standing view posed in a photographer’s studio; one hand rests on a book sitting on a table at his side. His headgear also rests on the table. Subject is wearing a an 8-button waist length jacket with sergeant’s stripes on each sleeve.
Period ink inscription reverse reads, “Oakley W. Carpenter / Sargeant Co. G / 52d Regiment / N.G.S.N.Y. / Nov 5th 1862.” BM: Morgan & Farach, Brooklyn.
Not much info was found on Carpenter; a page from a book of 176th New York Muster Roll Abstracts indicates that he was born in Flushing, NY in approx. 1841, and that he enlisted at the age of 21 on 10/28/62 at Brooklyn, NY for a period of 9 months. He was mustered into the 52nd NY National Guard on that date. It appears that he my have also had service in the 13th New York Infantry from 5/28/62 through 9/12/62. Further research certainly a possibility. [ld]
