Vignette bust view CDV of Lieutenant John Burton of the 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry as an enlisted man. He wears the typical double piped shell jacket peculiar to the 15th with a military vest underneath, a small bowtie and an impressive looking slouch hat.

Beneath the image in period ink is “RESPECTFULY J. BURTON.”

Image has very nice clarity with excellent contrast and is mostly clean. Bottom edge of the mount has been trimmed.

Reverse has a back mark for JOSEPH K. LUKENS… PHILADELPHIA along with some collector information at bottom. There is also a period pencil inscription at top that reads “TULLYTOWN, PA.”

Records show that John Burton was 35 years old when he enlisted as a Private in Company B, 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry on August 12, 1862. He rose through the ranks becoming Sergeant in March of 1863, 1st Sergeant in may of that year and finally commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on May 28, 1865. He was mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee on June 21, 1865.

The 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry was organized in October of 1862 and was assigned to the Army of the Cumberland. The regiment saw action at Stones River, Mossy Creek and several smaller skirmishes.

During its service the regiment lost 128 officers and men killed, died wounds and disease plus others wounded. [ad]
