Vignette bust image of Thomas D. Willis wearing the distinctive double piped shell jacket of the 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry.
Image is clear with good contrast in the facial area but the uniform has a spotty appearance to it. This does not detract. Willis looks rather serious and does have some piercing eyes making the image more interesting than the average bust view.
The bottom corners of the mount have been rounded.
Revers has a photographer's imprint for MORSE'S GALLERY OF THE CUMBERLAND with a blue 2 cent tax stamp above it. At bottom is an ink inscription of "THOS. D. WHITE CO. F 15TH P.V.C."
Thomas D. Willis was born on April 17, 1843. He enlisted as a Private in Company C, 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry on August 22, 1862. At some point he was transferred to Company F and was mustered out on June 21, 1865.
He died on Memorial Day 1920 and is buried in Fairview Cemetery, Fairview, Pennsylvania.
The 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry was organized in October of 1862 and was assigned to the Army of the Cumberland. The regiment saw action at Stones River, Mossy Creek and several smaller skirmishes.
During its service the regiment lost 128 officers and men killed, died of wounds and disease plus many others wounded. [ad]
