William Wallace Borst was born in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania on March 6, 1839 and attended Jefferson College.

He enlisted as a Private in Company I, 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry on September 6, 1862. He rose through the ranks being promoted twice, once to Commissary Sergeant on March 1, 1863 and then to Quartermaster Sergeant on June 2, 1863. The year 1864 brought another promotion, this time to 1st Sergeant on November 11, 1864. By war’s end Borst was Sergeant Major of his regiment holding two brevet promotions to 2nd and 1st Lieutenant but he was never mustered at those ranks. He was discharged at Nashville on June 21, 1865.

The 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry was organized in October of 1862 and was assigned to the Army of the Cumberland. The regiment saw action at Stones River, Mossy Creek and several smaller skirmishes.

During its service the regiment lost 128 officers and men killed, died wounds and disease plus others wounded.

After the war he became a purchasing agent for the Kansas & Pacific Railroad. In 1871 he was made general superintendent of the Rio Grande railroad and in 1880 went to Santa Fe as superintendent of the western division. In 1895 he became the receiver for the Denver, Lakewood & Golden Railway from which he retired in 1903.
