CDV is a waist-up view of Union surgeon William D. Stewart.  He is wearing a dark colored double-breasted coat with shoulder boards.  The bottom of the mount has a handwritten inscription which reads, “W. D. STEWART, SURGEON USV”

Reverse of image is marked with the photographer’s imprint, “BRADY’S, NATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT GALLERIES, BROADWAY & TENTH STREET, NEW YORK, NO. 352 PENNSYLVANIA AV. WASHINGTON, D. C.”.  Also on the reverse is a handwritten inscription at the top that reads, “TO COL. G. A. WOODWARD. DRS. EXAMINING BOARD, VET RESERVE CORPS, WASHINGTON DC, OCT 7TH 1864” and one at the bottom which reads, “VERY TRULY YOUR FRIEND WD STEWART, SURGEON USV, EX. BOARD, VET RES CORPS”.

Image is clear with good contrast. Some light surface dirt is present.

William D. Stewart was born in Kentucky and enlisted on August 3, 1861 as a surgeon in the US Volunteers Medical Staff. He received a promotion by Brevet to Lt. Colonel on June 1, 1865. He was mustered out on August 3, 1865. He died on October 26, 1886.
