Image is of an officer standing with his right hand resting on the back of a chair while the left hand holds his kepi in front of his lower chest.

The subject of the image is identified as Dr. Edgar Jackson of the 6th and 2nd New York Heavy Artillery. Dr. Jackson wears a dark frock coat devoid of any rank insignia, a dark military vest and dark trousers with a light, thin officer’s leg stripe.

The bottom of the image has a period ink inscription that reads “SINCERELY YOURS, DR. E. OWEN JACKSON.”

Reverse has the typical Brady back mark.

Edgar Jackson was 27 years old when he was commissioned Assistant Surgeon of the 6th New York Heavy Artillery at Washington, D. C. on January 15, 1863. He never joined the regiment and was dropped from the rolls on April 10, 1863.

Jackson next joined the staff of the 2nd New York Heavy Artillery on Aprils 11, 1863 but resigned on March 3, 1864.

Nothing is known of his post-war life but quick research shows a Dr. Edgar Jackson from Long Island who was with the Army died at home in May of 1864 from “exposure in the service.” This may or may not be the same man.
