Moore was 26 years old when he was appointed 2^nd Lieutenant in Company C, 16^th New York Infantry on May 15, 1861. He was promoted to Captain on August 7, 1862 and was mustered out at Albany on May 22, 1863.

During his service the regiment saw action at Bull Run, the Seven Days, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Salem Church.

Pliny next joined up as a 2^nd Lieutenant in Company G, 26^th New York Cavalry on January 26, 1865. He was promoted Captain on February 11, 1865 and was mustered out at Plattsburgh, N.Y. on July 7, 1865. The regiment served on the border between the US and Canada in the New England region as a response to the St. Albans raid.  [ad]
