This individual photo of the white slave child Rebecca is meant to be a companion view to one of her with Charlie and Rosa titled “THE SLAVE CHILDREN OF NEW ORLEANS.” This CDV shows Rebecca seated by herself next to a large American flag. It is captioned simple “REBECCA” with a quote of her saying “OH! HOW I LOVE THE OLD FLAG.” The image is clean with good contrast but there is some moderate surface dirt throughout the piece and a stain in the lower right corner.
The reverse reads:
”No.5… THE NETT PROCEEDS FROM THE SALE OF THESE PHOTOGRAPHS WILL BE DEVOTED TO THE EDUCATION OF COLORED PEOPLE IN THE DEPARTMENT OF THE GULF, NOW UNDER THE COMMAND OF MAJ. GEN. BANKS.” There is also publication information dating the image to 1864 and a photographer’s imprint for CHAS. PAXSON…NEW YORK.
