Front-mark: “Geo. O. Ennis…Richmond, VA.” Back-mark: “Selden & Co./ Photograph Dealers/ Richmond, Virginia.” This carte is a memorial card published after Lee’s death, Oct. 12, 1870. It features a small oval portrait of Lee (1.125 x .875”) framed by two national “Stars and Bars” flag in color. Inscribed below Lee’s name are the words: “One of the few immortal names/that were not born to die/ In Memoriam”—all framed with floral ornamentation.

Though carte faded, w/light chipping at the margins, Lee’s portrait image remains clean and easily discernable. Else VG. An unusual Lee “memorial” Carte de Visite. Excellent collectible for “Marse Robert” aficionados.  [JP]
