Back mark: “E. Anthony, New York/ From Photographic Negative/ Brady’s National Portrait Gallery.” Clean, clear, exceptionally sharp image of bareheaded General Couch in a standing pose w/right hand tucked Napoleonic fashion in coat.
Darius Couch was a member of the famed West Point class of 1846, which furnished 19 generals to both Civil War armies, including Stonewall Jackson and George B. McClellan, the latter of whom was a good friend, who would later procure Couch a Brigadier’s commission of Volunteers. Couch commanded a division at Antietam, and the II Corps at Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. Extremely distrustful of Gen. Hooker, resigned his commission, but was reinstated and later led the XXIII Corps with distinction at the Battle of Nashville. A McClellan supporter and friend to the end, Couch ran for various offices as a Democrat, including the Governor of New Jersey, but without success.
Solid collectible Civil War commander aficionados. [jp]
