Image shows a young clean-shaven man in a white shirt and dark civilian suit with a large dark bowtie.

The image is clear with good contrast and light surface dirt on the paper and mount.

Reverse has photographer’s imprint for A. H. DUDLEY…HAMILTON, N.Y.

A pencil inscription below the imprint reads “LIEUT. COULTIS SHOT AT FAIR OAKS + DIED SOON AFTER AT HOSPITAL PHILADELPHIA.” Writing could be late 19th or early 20th Century but hard to tell.

William Henry Coultis was 28 years old when he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in Company C, 61st New York Infantry at Hamilton, New York.

The 61st was assigned to the 2nd Corps of the Army of the Potomac. They saw their first action at Fair Oakes on May 31, 1862 but were more heavily engaged on June 1st when Lt. Coultis was wounded.

He died in Philadelphia on June 23, 1862.     [ad]
