CDV is a three-quarter seated view of Peter J. Donnelly. He is posed sitting by a cloth covered table wearing a dark civilian suit with a white shirt and a thin black bowtie.

Image has excellent clarity and contrast. Paper and mount are good.

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for J. A. KEENAN…PHILADELPHIA. There is also a nice period ink inscription that reads “MY FRIEND J. C. SPROULE. / PETER J. DONNELLY, MURFREESBORO, TENN  MCH 2, 1863.” There is also some collector information in pencil.

Peter J. Donnelly enlisted as a Private in Company B, 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry on August 22, 1862 and was discharged as a member of Company E on June 17, 1865.

After his service Donnelly moved to Wilmington, Delaware. While there he contracted rheumatism. In 1894 he entered the Hampton Virginia Home for Disabled Soldiers where he died on March 15, 1912. He is buried in grave #10219 in Hampton National Cemetery.

The 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry was organized in October of 1862 and was assigned to the Army of the Cumberland. The regiment saw action at Stones River, Mossy Creek and several smaller skirmishes. During its service the regiment lost 128 officers and men killed, died of wounds and disease plus many others wounded.  [ad]
