Image is a full standing view of Captain Adam Kramer of the 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry. He stands leaning against a high backed chair over which a US flag is draped. Kramer wears a dark forge cap with crossed cavalry sabers on the front of the crown, a dark frock coat with matching trousers and vest. Clearly visible on his coat are Captains shoulder straps.

Image is extremely clear and clean with excellent contrast. Mount corners are slightly trimmed. Bottom of the mount has a strong period ink inscription that reads “A. KRAMER, CAPT. 15th PA. CAV.”

Reverse has a double stamped photographer's imprint of MORSE'S GALLERY OF THE CUMBERLAND... NASHVILLE, TENN.

Adam Kramer was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States. He enlisted in the Regular Army on May 16, 1857. He was assigned to Company F of the 2nd US Dragoons and was discharged on May 16, 1862 at the expiration of his term of service.

Kramer enlisted for a second time as a Private in Company I, 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry on September 6, 1862 and was promoted to Sergeant on October 30, 1862. He received a commission to 1st Lieutenant of Company B on March 1, 1863 and a little over two months later he was promoted to Captain of Company M on May 8, 1863. He was mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee on June 21, 1865.

In December of 1865 he returned to the Regular Army and served until 1897 serving with the 2nd and 6th US Cavalry. He earned a brevet promotion to Major for gallant service against hostile Indians at Ash Creek, Arizona on July 17, 1882. It was also noted that Buffalo Bill Cody began his service as a Scout in Kramer's Company.

Adam Kramer died in Iowa City, Iowa on November 12, 1901. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
