Three-quarter seated view of Charles H. Sherman of the 9th New York Heavy Artillery.
Sherman is posed seated with his right hand thrust in his vest in a classic Napoleonic pose. He wears a dark frock coat with Corporal chevrons, dark military vest and light trousers. On Sherman’s left chest is a prominent cloth 6th Corps badge.
Image has good clarity and contrast. Mount and paper are good.
Reverse has a very nice period ink inscription that reads “CHALS. H. SHERMAN, CO.K 9th N.Y. ARTY.” There is also a good bit of collector information in pencil.
Charles H. Sherman enlisted as a Private in Company K, 9th New York Heavy Artillery on August 13, 1862.
The 9th served in the defenses of Washington until May of 1864 when they were attached to the 6th Corps as infantry. They fought at Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Monocacy, Winchester, Cedar Creek and Sailor’s Creek.
Sherman was promoted to Corporal on March 6, 1865 and was mustered out July 6, 1865 at Washington, D.C. [ad]
