Grenville Fontaine Sparrow (carried on the records as Greenville) was born in Portland, Maine on September 27, 1836.

Sparrow enlisted as a sergeant in Company A, 17th Maine on August 18, 1862. He was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant on May 3, 1863 and shortly thereafter was transferred as a 1st lieutenant to Company B. In 1864 he attained the rank as captain. He was mustered out on June 4, 1865 in Washington, D.C.

The 17th Maine was organized in August of 1862 and was assigned to the 3rd Corps with which it fought at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. In the last named battle it became well-known for defending the stone wall on the southwest side of the famous Wheatfield. After Gettysburg the regiment was transferred to the 2nd Corps and fought at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and Sailor’s Creek. During its service the regiment lost 16 officers and 354 enlisted men killed and died of wounds and disease.

Grenville Sparrow died on March 15, 1907 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Portland, Maine.  [ad]
