CDV is a period copy of a larger albumen image of Lieutenant Colonel Thomas S. Bell. He is posed leaning on a small table with his right hand with his left hand at his hip. He wears a dark double-breasted frock coat with light trousers and at his waist is his sword belt with a cap box and sword attached.

The border from the original albumen print is visible around the edges of the image showing that this CDV is a period copy,

Clarity is fair and the contrast is a bit light. Mount and paper have light wear and some surface dirt from age.

Reverse has photographer’s back mark for E. WOODWARD… WEST CHESTER. There is also a collector ID in pencil which is confirmed by other online images of Bell.

Thomas Sloan Bell was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania on May 12, 1838.

When the Civil War began Bell was commissioned 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant of the 9th Pennsylvania Infantry on April 24, 1861. He served for three months and was mustered out at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on July 29, 1861.

Bell was next commissioned as Lieutenant Colonel of the 51st Pennsylvania Infantry on July 27, 1861. He saw action with the regiment at Roanoke Island, 2nd Bull Run and South Mountain. At Antietam he stormed and successfully captured the Burnside bridge with his regiment. As he was reforming his men, they came under artillery fire. Bell was hit in the head by a shell fragment and was carried from the field. He died later in the day. His body was returned home to West Chester where it was buried in Oaklands Cemetery.
