William W. Owens was born in Philadelphia in 1836. He enlisted at Norristown as a Private in Company B, 4th Pennsylvania Infantry on April 20, 1861 for three months and was mustered out on July 27, 1861.

In July of 1862 Owens was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 51st Pennsylvania. He was wounded in the battle of the Wilderness and during his home recovery he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in July of 1864. Owens returned to the 51st in August while it was in front of Petersburg, however the surgeon discovered his wounds were not properly healed and Owens was sent back home. When he did return in September he was made Captain of Company D.

In January of 1865 Owens was on duty at the picket line when the Confederates hoisted a flag of truce. Captain Owens tied his white handkerchief to a ramrod and went out to meet his Confederate counterpart. The discussion regarded Confederate peace emissaries who were on their way to talks with President Lincoln. The James river was frozen and the emissaries wished to pass through Union lines. This was eventually arranged.

After the war Owens returned to Philadelphia and in 1870 moved to Norristown where he was employed for 37 years as deputy sheriff of Montgomery County. He died on November 18, 1918.

The 51st Pennsylvania served most of its time in the 9th Corps and was engaged in 62 battles and skirmishes and is famous for taking Burnsides Bridge at Antietam along with the 51st New York. [ad]
