WONDERFUL INK INSCRIBED IMAGE OF 15TH PENNSYLVANIA CAVALRY MAJOR KILLED IN ACTION

$225.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 945-78

Image shows Major Adolph Rosengarten in a very unassuming pose with one hand holding his top hat by his side and the other hand in his pocket. He wears a dark civilian suite with white shirt and dark bowtie.

The clarity and contrast are good. Paper has some faint ink stains on the Major’s left chest and arm. Top corners of the mount have been rounded. Bottom of mount has a period ink inscription that reads “MAJOR ROSENGARTON KILLED AT MURFREESBORO.”

Reverse has photographers imprint for F. GUTEKURST PHILADA. There is also some collector information in pencil.

Adolph Rosengarten was born on December 29, 1838.

At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted as 1st Sergeant in the Anderson Independent Company of Pennsylvania Cavalry. When the company was enlarged to a regiment Rosengarten was instrumental in raising recruits and was commissioned Major on November 13, 1862.

On December 29, 1862 during the battle of Stones River a battalion of the 15th was ambushed by some South Carolina Confederates. Riding with his battalion to their relief Rosengarten was killed in the fighting.

His remains were brought to Philadelphia where they were interred in Laurel Hill Cemetery.  [ad]
