Image is a very nice CDV of Alexander S. Springsteen standing with one hand resting on the back of a chair. He wears a dark frock coat with narrow captain’s shoulder straps and light trousers.

Image has excellent clarity and contrast. Paper and mount are very nice.

Reverse has no photographer’s imprint. There is a pencil ID that reads “ALEX SPRINGSTEEN CAPT. 2nd U.S.C.T.” There are several modern pencil notations. One reads “IS IN THE HAND OF DR. MARY. WALKER.” We have had several images that came from an album she owned and this is one,

Alexander S. Springsteen was born in New York on February 5, 1842.

Springsteen enlisted as a sergeant in Company G, 125th New York Infantry on August 27, 1862. He was captured with his regiment at Harper’s Ferry on September 15, 1862 during the Antietam Campaign and was paroled the next day. Springsteen was promoted to 1st sergeant on March 1, 1863 and was discharged for promotion on October 29, 1863.

Springsteen was commissioned captain of Company K, 2nd US Colored Troops. The regiment served in Florida where Springsteen came down with yellow fever and died on September 6, 1864. He is buried in Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, Florida.  [ad]
