Charles Spaulding was 24 years old when he enlisted as a Private in Company F, 83rd New York Infantry on May 27, 1861.
The 83rd saw action at Cedar Mountain, 2nd Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam and Fredericksburg. In the last named battle Spaulding was wounded severely in the right arm leading to its amputation. He was discharged for his wounds on January 30, 1863. [ad]
