Augustus Campbell was born in New York in 1819. He attended Albany Medical College and interned at Bellevue. He was practicing medicine in Gloversville, New York when he packed up and went to the California gold fields. He returned with his family to New York in 1859.

At age 42 Campbell was commissioned Assistant Surgeon of the 77th New York Infantry on February 15, 1862.

The 77th served with the Army of the Potomac and while Campbell was with them they saw action at Mechanicsville, Garnett’s Farm, Golding’s Farm, Savage’s Station, Antietam and Fredericksburg. Campbell was discharged on February 2, 1863.

Campbell next served as assistant surgeon with the 148th New York from May 8, 1863 to September 1, 1863. During that time the 148th served as a garrison unit in the Suffolk, Virginia area.

On September 1, 1863 Campbell joined the 40th New York as surgeon. He served with them at Bristoe Station, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna and Cold Harbor before being discharged for disability on June 9, 1864.

Dr. Campbell died Iowa in 1889.  [ad]
