CDV image of William H. Farber posed holding his dark slouch hat in one hand and resting the other on the back of a chair. He wears a dark frockcoat with matching trousers. The coat has captains shoulder straps and a triangular 4th Corps badge on the left chest.

Image has good clarity and contrast but the paper has moderate foxing and the mount corners are clipped. The bottom center of the mount is marked with the photographer’s imprint for a Mansfield, Ohio artist.

Reverse has a canceled 2 cent stamp at center. Top of reverse has a period pencil inscription of “CO’S C. D. & F” and at bottom in period ink is “YOURS TRULY WM. H. FARBER CAPT. 64th REGT. OHIO VET. VOL. INF.”

William H. Farber was born near Bellville, Ohio in 1842. He was 19 years old when he enlisted as a private in Company C, 64th Ohio Infantry on October 22, 1861. During his service Farber saw many promotions. He was made corporal on October 31, 1862, commissary sergeant on May 11, 1863 and was commissioned 1st lieutenant of Company D on December 9, 1864. On February 28, 1865 Farber was appointed adjutant and was finally made captain of Company F on April 26, 1865. He was mustered out at Victoria, Texas on December 3, 1865.

Farber died in Mansfield, Ohio on February 5, 1898 and is buried there in Mansfield Cemetery.

The 64th Ohio saw action at Stones River, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, Dallas, New Hope Church, Kennesaw, Atlanta, Spring Hill, Franklin and Nashville.  [ad]
