Image is a chest-up view of Henry F. Manges of Company E, 53rd Pennsylvania Infantry. The bearded Manges wears a dark frock coat with shoulder straps. Between the third and fourth button of his coat he wears a metal 2nd Corps badge with an enameled center.
Image has excellent clarity and good contrast. Paper and mount have light to moderate surface dirt along the edges. Upper right corner of the paper has been torn and reglued but this does not affect the image.
Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for JOHN F. NICE…LEWISBURG, PA. At bottom in period pencil is “YOURS TRULY H. F. MANGES 1ST LT. 53 P.V.I.”
Henry Franklin Manges (carried on some rolls as Mangus) was born August 30, 1839 in Pottsville, Pennsylvania.

After the war Manges was very successful in the lumber business. He died on May 7, 1902 and is buried in West Laurel Hill Cemetery in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania.
